4/5

From the very start, audiences will recognise that ‘Soulmates’ is a horror. Director W. Trent Welstead doesn’t hold back and gets straight to it in setting up this chilling and grotesque horror that will surely make audiences feel uncomfortable.

Chase Sears and Sara McGehee are well cast as our leads and give solid performances. Both deliver plenty of raw emotion which stands out on screen which fits this silent horror film perfectly. Even with the lack of dialogue, the performances hold up well and keeping the audiences attention.

The use of visual effects and sound effects in this film is worth noting as they blend perfectly to create a ‘circus of horror’ feel. The sound design jumps out and helps to create the eeriness and chaos Welstead intended. The editing is tight and well put together with a solid colour grade which is fitting for the genre. A great time of post production has been spent here which is to be expected for the abstract nature of the film. The cinematography works exceedingly well as well and captures the chaos of the location whilst also treating the audience to some truly disturbing scenes. It all fits together to create a unique and abstract horror film that fans of the genre will enjoy.
